Poetry

Lithe

I spell all the secrets on my tongue against the curves
and waves crashing
in zigzags down her frame
like a child she stares up at me, like I’m corrupting her
but she takes my lips in hers when I think about stopping
and after that there’s no thought left

take me
take me

like I know you want to

but she doesn’t know how much I want her
how much I want to take

in every kiss I steal another piece of who she pretends to be
and in each breath her soul whispers, soft and slow

save me
save me

like I know you want to

but she doesn’t know how much I want to
how much I’d love to hold her fractured soul in my hands
and tell her everything’s going to be okay,
even if it isn’t true

I can’t save souls
and I can’t turn nightmares into dreams, but tonight
I’ll steal every gasp, every breath, every sigh
until she feels saved

and I’ll whisper back
to the sadness in her eyes
and to the lonely soul hidden in her exhales
I’m sorry

I’m sorry
